Dear friends,
- 3 September 2024: ‘at least 12 migrants have died in a shipwreck in the English Channel’.
- 10 September 2024: ‘39 migrants died in a shipwreck off the coast of Senegal’.
- 28 September 2024: 9 migrants died, 48 are missing and 27 were rescued only 7.5 km from the island of Hierro. Rescue vessels must tell migrants to keep still until they have received life jackets to prevent them from drowning if their boat capsizes. This disaster ocurred at night with a storm at sea.
The ‘Migration Issues’ Committee of the Conference of INGOs of the Council of Europe, in which the European Network Church on the Move (https://en-re.eu) participates, has just published a press release recalling
the tragedy of the shipwrecks of migrants not only in the Mediterranean Sea but also in the English Channel and off the coast of sub-Saharan Africa.
The Committee is counting on the commitments made by many Council of Europe member states to ‘combat the trafficking and smuggling of migrants’ and ‘guarantee them their fundamental rights’.
Please circulate this press release to your networks so that we can remain vigilant and promote respect for the most basic human rights.
